Day 2 with the Ashburn Gardners in Tucson

After a good night’s sleep and playing with cousins,  the grand kids were all ready for water time!  Ricky, Jeffry and Kerri loaded up the cars with kids and sunscreen and towels and water and snacks and headed to the Mundle neighborhood pool.  My three little M&M&Ms are true water babies and cannot seem to get enough splashing and jumping!!  They are fearless!

From Ashburn Virginia to Tucson Arizona

Finally, Ricky, Mateo and Marluce were about to land in Tucson for a week-long vacation.  I had Abby for the day, so Poppa picked up Maxwell and headed to the airport.   Soon after, I heard the garage door open and Abby and I ventured out to greet our Virginia family.  And, this would be the first time that Abby was introduced to her cousins.

Relaxing and visiting and listening to tales of a grand kid’s life!

Max likes to make a good impression on his cousins by dressing up for the occasion!

7 6 4The kids started getting restless in the little house and so I hooked up a wacky water thingy and let them cool off a bit in the backyard, much to their delight!

For dinner, we had a huge spread of salad bar, sandwich bar, Mexican dip, chips of all kinds and teriyaki meatballs!  There was something for everyone and the leftovers would serve us well later in the week for snacks and lunches.  The Virginia kids left with the Pantano Edge kids to retire for the night.  More tomorrow.

so very hot in Tucson

so itsy bitsy Abigail is just sitting now.  She cannot stand and play in the sprinkler.  She cannot reach the water table in the backyard.  What is a bitsy girl to do on such a hot day?

We made a mini water table with a little tub from Max’s Mini Mart and a few baubles and voila –

She splashed.

She tasted.

She laughed.

She spilled.

Nana and Abby both got a fresh change of clothes and off for a nap!  Abby – not Nana!20130603_15425720130603_154519

on this day in 2007 …

Tristan came to visit us all the way from Tennessee.  Since we had an earlier invitation to attend Samantha Sherman’s Bat Mitzvah, Jay & Jackie graciously added her to the guest list.  Of course, NO visit from my granddaughter is complete without the traditional let’s shop for something new for you to wear spilling from my mouth.  Tristan picked out the perfect little brown and white cotton dress to wear to the festivities.  Our day began at the breathtaking historic Stone Avenue Temple in Tucson.  This was my first time visit to this temple, and I was in for a real treat.  As soon as we entered, I could feel the history coursing through my veins.  I was truly in awe.  The service was inspiring and Sammy’s tender voice did not waver as she recited the words from the Torah.   After the service, Gramps, Tristan and I retreated to our local breakfast place and had a late breakfast/early lunch.  Conversations with this fourteen year old teenager were always interesting as she shuffled between being a little girl to an old soul.  The same evening, Tristan changed from her dress to a new skirt and blouse, pulled her hair back and got ready for the night of dinner and dancing and celebration at the Hawaiian themed party.

I love this photo of her.  Tristan and her Grandpa Bob (and later on, Gramps) have always had a special relationship.  They know how to make each other laugh.  And isn’t that so important in life?

05 21 2013 Orange Juice

Max is amazing.  Show him something once and it is locked in his mind.  Max’s parents are consistent in his food and drink choices.  If organic is available, then organic he gets.  He does not drink juice from any store as it has way too much sugar.  He is not allowed juice without sugar because it has artificial sweeteners.  Since he is allowed healthy foods, fruits and veggies, I thought he could learn to squeeze organic oranges and have a special treat of his very own juice.  After the first time, he was hooked.  Today was no exception.  With a little help from Poppa (cutting the oranges in half and providing a bit of muscle), Max made the perfect glass of orange juice and had a quick taste before helping to clean up the mess.  He sat down and enjoyed the fruits of his labor.  After polishing off the juice, he summed up the entire experience with one little word … “tasty”.

the Life of Pi

I normally do not comment on movies, except to say I love it or hate it.  This movie did something to me.  It really moved me.  Everyone MUST see this movie.  It is not like a movie that you think you know what will happen.  You probably will not recognize any actors in this movie – I sure didn’t.  The special effects and nature photography are stunning.  The story lines were riveting.  There was laughter and tears.

Take some time,  get some buttered popcorn and settle in for over 2 hours of pure delight.  You won’t be sorry.

a crazy little thing called LIFE

I am getting way too familiar with all the wings at Tucson Medical Center.  I know how to get to each ward, the emergency room and (very important here) the cafeteria.  Not for their food as I compare all hospital food to my days at St Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction where you could get mashed potatoes (real ones) a fried chicken leg (so yummy) and a regular old piece of Holsum bread with real butter for a buck something and it was like having dinner at home.  This was a staple of mine during my employment as a nurse’s aide and later on working in the nursing office.  Nowadays in hospitals, there is always a conglomeration of some type of casserole,  Not my cup of tea.  So, no, it is not for the food.  It is because it has big tables and I know which ones have outlets near them so I can spread out my accounting and work while Bob is sleeping or in surgery.  It helps to have numbers bumping back and forth in my brain to counteract the medical jargon and talk of transplants and heart stents and blood sugars and more.  Numbers make sense to me.  Medicine, not so much.  So another 30 days with ambulances and 3 hospitalizations and surgery and waiting.  Hubs is home from the various hospital visits now and for the time being, is doing well.

Saturday I open the freezer door and see that the ice in the ice tray is melting.  WHAT?  I listen with ear pressed against the refrigerator door.  Nothing.  Not the usual compressor noise kicking on and off.  Must be the breaker.  Move everything away from the door to the fuse box.  All breakers are in their proper place.  Well, that can’t be good.  I hear something …  is it a bird?  Is it a plane?? NO – it’s SUPERSONS!  And a brand new refrigerator is delivered on the morning of Mother’s Day.  My boys saved me and what a relief having someone take care of me while Bob is in the hospital.  I am forever in their debt.

Mothers Day Brunch for Kerri, Maggie and me at the University Marriott, where we were treated to a yummy buffet, a box of chocolates, Abby singing but also to watching Max riding in the glass elevator with Mahmaw waving until his little arm almost fell off!  Then, up to the Mundle’s room for Mimosa’s.  Yummy!2013 mothers day 1

In the meantime, we are having our Friday Family Dinners and Abby visits on Monday and Tuesday while Max maintains his Thursday-Friday routine at Nana’s and Poppa’s house.

Look what I can do, nana!
Look what I can do, nana!

Max pulls his shirt up over the back of his head and reminds me of those elves on JibJab!  He is proud of this new accomplishment and demonstrates various versions of this feat, shirt over the back of the head and the shirt over his face.  This goes on for much of the afternoon.  Amazing!

I announce the annual Camp NANA in chalk on the back patio.  Max is impressed.  Max is so impressed that shortly after he sees it, I hear the unmistakable sound of hose water and see that he has entirely washed my promo away.  Fame is so fleeting.

The Adventures of Nigel & Buffy on the court.

It was a beautiful day in Tucson Arizona – and no way we were going to stay indoors all day long.  Max already had his lunch and didn’t want a snack yet.  We loaded up our hat and visor, sunglasses, racquets and tennis balls and headed out to Jesse Owens Park.  Max, er I mean Nigel, came away from his first lesson with the basics.  Stand like this.  Bend your knees a tad.  Hold your racquet straight and watch the ball – not the racquet.  To be continued next Thursday …1 Max plays tennis

our first Bountiful Basket

Sally Stevens and Tanya Jolly started Bountiful Baskets Food Co-op in May of 2006. It was a winning combination from the beginning. Tanya and Sally both had experience running their own small food co-ops that were not web based. As their small co-ops grew it challenged them to think of a way to keep up as more families were wanting to save money on healthy food. Adding a little bit of e-commerce technology to the mix was just the trick. Since May of 2006 BBFC has grown from 2 sites and an average of 120 families a cycle participating, to hundreds of sites in 16 states and countless participating families! In April of 2011 BBFC started to offer 100% organic baskets every week at nearly every site.

The Co-op offers a conventional produce basket very other week which is generally ½ fruit and ½ veggies. The monetary contribution is $15.00 and is generally worth $50.00 retail. Organic baskets require a contribution of $25. To participate visit http://www.BountifulBaskets.org and check the schedule to see when your state is available to make your monitary contribution using a debit or credit card. Then, pick up your basket on Saturday morning at the time and place you chose when you contributed!

Virginia – Day 12

Waking up in Northern Virginia to five and one half inches of snow on the ground.  Brrrr.  Back in Arizona, this is our Springtime!  I had forgotten how the northeast cold can sting.  I heard the grandkids getting ready to play out in the snow.  Mateo and his Abuela, Gloria, made a snowman in the backyard and then safely transported it on a sled all the while gingerly maneuvering the gentle “hill”.  Once safely in place at the front of the house, the sled was removed and the little guy stood to greet all who passed by.

Since this was the beginning of Spring break, I was hoping to spend the day packing and playing with the grandkids.  Before I could engage them, they were packed up in the truck and whisked off to places unknown – probably to enjoy the day sledding or making snowballs.  I guess this would be the time to mention that not all was quiet on the Virginia front.  Ricky and Katia are in the beginnings of divorce proceedings.  My stay was not always welcome by my daughter in law.  There were biting comments and hurt feelings.  There had been several times over the past 14 years when a darker side had spewed ugly and mean words my way, but this was different.  This time there was a sort of finality.  I have never been  accustomed to a child screaming at a parent – no matter the age.  Being chastised and degraded by a child whom you have loved is not an easy thing to face.  And, frankly, it was never attempted in my childhood – let alone tolerated!  But, there it was.  And the sting of the words burned in a way that the icy weather never could.

I spent my last day working on some accounting issues and folding and picking up.  The curtains were open and the bright snow under the sun spilled a soul cleansing brightness over the room.

Rick picked me up after work and we headed to a home cooked meal graciously offered by Isabel and a welcome reprieve from the tension.  The children were entertaining, and after watching half of their beloved “the Voice”, they performed a dance routine for the grown-ups.

1 2 3

Ricky and I returned to his house where he succumbed to sleep.  I had chosen to stay awake and work on my accounting.  We were leaving the house at 3 a.m. and I could sleep on the plane.  But not before venturing upstairs to kiss my grandkids goodnight and good-bye “until next time”.  Mateo is a philosophical child when it comes to good-byes and a tender one at heart.  Both of our eyes filled as we said our farewells and hugged and kissed and vowed that it would not be long before we spent time together again.  Marluce is my tough “I am a wanna be tomboy who loves to dress like a princess” mini-me (although I never wanted to be a tomboy!).  But her good-bye hugs are heartwarming and her words of wishing I did not have to leave her, are heartfelt.  Again with the tears and hugs and kisses and I had to tear myself away from her before I could not.

Virginia – Day 10 Dinner!

After several hours filled with kids, Ricky and my new friend, Isabel, joined me for dinner at a swanky Mexican bar and grille. Yummy froo froo drink and a chimi and I was back in the real world. Sopapillas with chocolate sauce and whipped cream? Hmmmm. Still wondering about that choice!  Always fun to visit new restaurants and check out the food and decor!1

Virginia Day FOUR

Hard to believe, my first Granddaughter got married today.  She was happy and nervous and beautiful and gracious.   A cute little country church was the background for this young couple to begin their new life.

.    2013-03-17 13.14.39

This is the part where the preacher asked for the rings – no response.  The preacher then asked if Tristan knew where the rings were and she replied affirmatively.  As he queried again, the response from the Bride was “in my car!”  A light chuckle from all involved made the ceremony all of what Tristan is.  Very cute and the preacher was still sharing some laughs over that moment during the reception.  The rings were retrieved from the aforementioned vehicle and the rest of the ceremony went off without so much of a hiccup.

2013-03-17 14.27.42

And, as a bonus, I got to reconnect with my grandson, Chase (now 16) and granddaughter, Quinn (now 6 soon to be 7).  Both were charming and Chase and Ricky carried on conversations like they had never been apart.  Chase is clever and smart and has a way with writing that would have made my Dad so proud.  He has a quick wit and shows his sisters a lot of love.  I cannot describe the feeling when I saw Chase’s face and immediately knew that was my first grandson – until he spoke.  The high-pitched little boy voice was an almost adult deeper voice.  It shocked me since I had not seen or heard his voice since 2008.  I am quite proud to call him Grandson.  These are bonds that never deserved to be broken.  I only hope they can be mended now.

I could listen to Chase for hours.  His interests in comedy and computers and music and more was better received by Ricky, since he is a guy!  But I so enjoyed listening to their exchanges and made me beam when Ricky stated simply that he had a great time talking with Chase and that Chase seemed like a really good kid.  I don’t think Ricky has seen Chase or spent time with him since Chase was a toddler.  This was a positive experience for all of us.

Such a thrill to hear Quinn call after me “Grandma” spotted with little conversations about her school and she is a cheerleader and she has an All American doll and then the heartbreaker:  “Grandma, can you come back in July for my birthday?”  I tried to explain to her that I probably could not – and that tore at my heart.  I just wanted to put her in my pocket and bring her home!

2:30 pm and we are now attending party number 2 of the day.  Valeria is turning five years old and we have all been invited to her birthday blowout, complete with a puppet show,  DJ, Dancers, Goofy and Minnie and Mickey Mouse!  Very fun party; Valeria was adorable, Estevan was funny and Nydia, Carlos and Carolina were as charming as ever.  So nice to see their family again.

Oh, you think the day was over?  Au contraire!  To dinner with Ricky and the grand kids at Blue Ridge Grille.  The prime rib was phenomenal, Ricky said his steak was the same, Marluce enjoyed her chicken tenders and sautéed Portobello mushrooms while Mateo dined on his ala carte grilled cheese, sliced apples and milk!  Wonderful day ending with a relaxing dinner listening to grand kids talk about school and friends and parties.

Virginia Day TWO

Ricky goes to work.  First day at his new job.

Katia goes to work.

Kids go to school.

I work on accounting and in early afternoon I get the bug to go outside – even though the air is still quite cold and crisp!  I see leaves.  I find a rake.  And three hours later, I find myself finished.  Back inside for a nice hot shower and more accounting.  Ricky picks me up and then we retrieve the kids from Majest. Home so they can change and off we go to Wegmans for pizza and movie night.  Some light grocery shopping afterwards and returning home, we find Katia hard at work on the goody bags for Mateo’s belated birthday party on Saturday morning.  Mateo has made it somewhat of a tradition to be sick on his birthday of February 10th.  This year it was strep throat.  Not sure if he has ever actually celebrated his birthday ON his birthday! 2013-03-15 20.24.482013-03-15 20.24.57

Virginia Day ONE

Ricky went to work.  Katia went to work.  Mateo & Marluce went to school.  I worked on accounting and visited with Gloria and generally just got settled.03 15 2013 2

Nearing evening time, Gloria and I left to pick up the kids at their after school program at Majest Martial Arts studio here in Ashburn.  Each day they are picked up by a limo,(Yes, I said limo) from their elementary school and transported to the studio, where they do their homework and then have Taekwondo lessons. Back Camera

The studio is immaculate and there are tables to use for homework and different classes for all ages.  Here are my two little almost black belts (Okay, they are white belts but they have stripes!) getting ready to come home with us.

Stopped at the store on the way home.  Gloria rented the kids a movie, which we all enjoyed, before the kids had their bedtime.

and the time WHOOSHES by …

Days fly by so fast that I can barely keep up!  Trying to get ready for my 2 week long trip to Virginia and a birthday moustache bash and still working my accounting and housework and laundry, OH MY!  Well, the 3rd birthday part for Mr Max was quite a success.  Moustaches and balloons were everywhere.  Kids were laughing and playing and Bob and Tom and Jeffry and Jamie were all kibitzing.  Mahmaw and O Canada Poppa were running back and forth making sure all of the guests were fed and recycle items picked up and in general, making the entire affaire seamless!  Kerri had everything so well thought out and executed.  Such a clever young lady!  Just look!

bday 3 bday 2 bday 1

complete with PB&J moustache sandwiches, Root Beer Floats and Warm Popcorn!  Max was a perfect gentleman, thanking each person for their gift and hugs all around!  On Monday, Miss Abigail came to visit and was charming as ever.  We strolled around the neighborhood and she was not shy about telling Nana what she thought when I had to stop to do something or wait for a car!

abbyCarriage 1While shopping for a snack to take on my plane trip to Virginia – I found this HUGE bag of carrots.  Just why  would someone need a 25 pound bag of carrots??  Have to think on that one.  really big carrots

My flights to Virginia were great!  Each leg I had a window seat and each leg, the aisle seat and I had the middle seat open so we could share it to hold our stuff  Bonus!  I could have sworn the guy on the 2nd leg of the flight was Anderson Cooper –  until he mentioned that he worked for Hilton Hotels!  Glad I did not ask for his autograph.

Landed at DCA Regan and Ricky was right there waiting for me.  Very late dinner at Amphora Diner and then home to hugs from Katia and Gloria and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

my friend, KAREN

so, let me tell you just a little bit about my friend, Karen.  But first, a disclaimer.  Not sure what was happening with my hair that day, but, it is what it is.  And I hope it will never be that way again.  Back to my story …
Karen and I were telephone buddies for a few years before we even met.  She was with a soccer club on the far northwest side of Tucson and I on the far East side of Tucson.  We interacted for soccer club business and later referees and her kids and my kids and now as friends of probably 20 years and grandmothers and always, free spirits.  We have discussed everything from God and kids and husbands and the F word and cars and finances and worries to where should we meet for lunch and when should we meet for lunch and what shall we eat when we meet for lunch.  And it is during these lunches, as infrequent as they are, that we can laugh together and more often than not, listen to the concerns of one another and feel our eyes fill with tears.
We have shared gripes and sicknesses and worries and excitement over trips and other plans.  We talk about everything and anything.  In short, we are just not afraid to be ourselves – with ourselves!  I adore her daughter, and although I do not know her son nearly as well, I can see he has turned into a fine young man holding his firstborn in a black and white photo that proud mama and grandma holds up for me to see.  Her husband is witty and charming and always ready with a big bear hug.
I am not sure how we first met face to face because it seems as though I have known her all of my life.  She inspires me at the age of – well, let’s just say she is hitting a milestone this year – she has found her personal niche.  She has always been an artist since I have known her.  But now, she is quite an accomplished artist as she travels to art shows to display and sell her unique craft and to teach classes, sharing her talents with the newbie artisans.  Her art is displayed and sold at some of the boutique stores in Tucson.  Art is such a personal talent and she is very brave to put it out there for display and wait for the comments on what she has created with her heart and soul.  Did I say that she inspires me?
If you have never had the pleasure of meeting my friend, Karen Phillips, then I am sorry for what you are missing.  And if you have met Karen, when you see her next, give her a big hug and tell her that her friend says hello and what are you up to now!

Hunting for PUDDLES

Since Tucson had gotten (gulp) quite a bit of snow on Wednesday, Max and I decided to head out on Thursday to hunt for puddles for jumping in!  Galoshes on his feet and raincoat donned, we walked the entirety of this little neighborhood on our quest for puddle perfection.
Nana kept a watchful eye checking on traffic so as not to impede the jumping process.
Sometimes the jumping was tested on puddles sans umbrella.
Other times, the umbrella was opened wide to deter the puddle splattering on top of the head.

We searched in the streets and on the sidewalks and in the walkways between the streets.

Max wanted to be under the umbrella while it was raining so badly (there was nary a raindrop in sight) that he sought out an RV in a neighbor’s drive and stood under the awning supports to achieve the desired rain effect as the snow melted, causing a dripping from the awning support to the umbrella protecting Max’s head.
A fairly successful morning culminating in a Nana/Max snowball fight at our little neighborhood  park with a toddler voice in the background jeering “missed me, Nana.  Missed me.”

a Guy’s day out

the morning started out with a little Max softly rising from his little bed around 7:30 and I hear
hi, Nana” and receive a perfect, albeit a bit slobbery, kiss on the cheek and a hug that would put any bear to shame!
I try to catch a few more zzzz’s as I hear the conversations between Max and his Poppa:
I can brush my teeth by myself.
Well, I need to help you a little bit.
But I can brush my teeth by myself.
Well, I still need to help you a little bit.
  But …
We need to get dressed because we are going to the restaurant to have breakfast with Tom.
Max sits down on the floor, lays out his jeans with the tag on the floor and wriggles his legs in place, hops up and pulls   the jeans in place.  Picks up his clean shirt, sticks it on his head so it covers his face, and runs into the bedroom yelling “hey poppa, I’m ready!”
Max signed his own card!

After a hearty breakfast of sausage, pancakes, eggs, waffle, cantaloupe, applesauce and milk (GULP), Poppa and Max said their good-byes to Tom and headed out to the Bear Canyon Library on Tanque Verde and returned home with a brand new library card and three – count ’em – THREE books in tow.
Later, I had a client at my home office working on some accounting issues.  Max was not shy about asking “when yew done working yew wanna play with me?”  When the client mentioned that he had to go “potty”, Max mis-interpreted that to mean my client was going to use his froggy potty, and yelled out ” noooooooooooooo –  you are too BIG!”
The kid is nothing if not honest!  Such an angel !

Once Upon a Time …

There was a little blond hair blue eyed boy who wriggled his way into my heart just when I thought there would be no more babies.  There had been a miscarriage in 1970 and a first baby in 1971.  Three more miscarriages and another baby in 1976.  Another miscarriage followed.  I kept secretly wishing that I would be blessed with just one more, but really thinking that, at age 31, my baby time was finished.

So, imagine my surprise after returning home from an unbelievable week in New York City, only to find out that another blessing was going to be mine.  And he was mine.  All mine.  Until,

along came a little blond hair blue eyed girl who wriggled her way into my heart.  And his.  And there were awards ceremonies graduations and white ropes and gold ropes and scholarships and cum laude and magna cum laude and blended family gatherings and an unforgettable wedding celebration and a honeymoon in Jamaica and a new home.

Then the magic happened … a little blond hair blue eyed boy who wriggled his way into my heart followed by a tiny dark haired beauty who is already learning how to wrap me around her little finger.

Behold.  Two little Valentines who make Nana’s heart so happy!

My WEEK in Review

Almost finished Mateo’s Birthday Adventure.  While his birthday is actually on February 10th (Gee, the nicest people seem to be born in February, don’t you think?), he will actually have his Birthday Adventure, commonly known as the Escape to Arlington, on Saturday February 16th.

Here is a sneak peek:  tickets to a kids improv comedy show, dinner at the Metro 29 as featured on Diner’s Drive Ins and Dives on Food Network with Guy Fieri (we dined there several times when we lived back there and it was excellent every time!) and custom cookies from Monster Cookies being delivered to Mateo and his dinner guests!

pancakes and milk shakes and french fries, OH MY
Cha Ching has an envelope behind with the dinner money!
Mario Bros / Luigi custom cookies will be delivered to
Mateo for his guests to enjoy!

Jeffry and I were treated to Birthday Dinner at Mays Counter Chicken & Waffles – a new diner here in Tucson!  Thank you Kerri and Maxwell and Abigail for a lovely evening.

By the way, the ladies from GJHS class of ’70 and I have made a pact.  60 is as old as we are getting.  This year and every year will be my 60th.  A deal is a deal!

Maxwell and I made LUV BUGS as our Friday Family Dinner place cards this week.  I peeled off the sticky backing while Maxwell placed everything just so!  He really did a nice job and always is so proud of himself when he completes a “job”.

We also had a great idea to make the entire back patio Valentine’s Hearts.  And by the we, I mean that Max told me what color to use and where to draw the heart.  He was sick and tired of having to wipe chalk from his hands.  “You do it, Nana”.

To top off a pretty nice week, I won this beauty from ReChique on FB:
AND
I found this great book at OfficeMax for only $5 and Max cannot get enough of it!  Poppa has read it twice, Nana three times, and his mommy has read it four times.  This is what people in other states call a jackpot – here in Arizona it is known as a GONGA!

For the rest of the week, I have planned on playing accounting catch up!  Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

TGIF

Starting a couple of weeks ago, we began Family Friday at our home.  Max spends Thursday nights with us and plays on Friday until a few hours before  Mommy and Daddy and Abby come over for Family dinner.
Max sets out the silverware on each place mat and then adds a special touch that we do as a project each week.  Last week, he colored and painted on card stock and then put adhesive letters on each one to spell out the names.  He decided what place card he would make for each person and also decided the seating order.
Today we have a special treat for each dinner guest that he is quite excited about.  Since it is top secret, I will have to wait until later tonight to share photos.
I am enjoying this Family Dinner Friday.  And if any of the other grand kids and families are ever back in Tucson on a Friday night, what a treat that would be!

Happy Birthday, Cristopher Chase!

at baby shower for the birth of Quinn
in Greensboro NC
The baby shower came and went. Thanksgiving was over and Christmas was just a memory. The date of January 30, 1997 was set and I thought that it would feel to me just like any other day. After all, I had delivered three babies myself. Just how exciting could this be to an “outsider”? I dressed and readied myself to go to St Joseph’s Hospital with the intention of checking in for a few moments with your Mom and Dad and then I would leave them to experience this wonder – this miracle – you!
I entered the hospital room with a basket of goodies that I made for this special day – lullaby cd’s, onesies, lotions for a very tiny you and some for your Mommy and so many other things. I gave both Cristopher and Sherrie my love and after hugs, I returned to my car in the parking lot. As I guided the car to the road, I found myself heading to your Uncle Jeffry’s school. I walked into the office and signed Jeffry out for the rest of the day. He ran to meet me in the school office and told me he was finishing an extra credit problem in Algebra and would return as soon as he turned his paper in to the teacher. I waited somewhat impatiently, tapping my fingers on the office counter and touting my story to anyone who would listen that I was going to meet my first Grandson!
Jeffry and I rushed to the hospital. While he was excited, I found myself in somewhat of a panic mode that I would not get to the hospital in time to hear the announcement of your birth. Fears were relieved as Jeffry and I walked in the room and had time to visit with your Mom and Dad before Sherrie was wheeled away by Cristopher and the attending nurses.
Within fifteen minutes, out walked my first son cuddling my first grandson in his arms. With just a simple “here he is, Mom”, He walked closer so I could get a better look and then states matter of fact that he had to get you back to the nurses so they could clean you up and check your vitals. Tears flooded my eyes so I could barely see your little face and any words I had planned on saying just got lost in my throat. Just then, Jeffry returned to the waiting area with your Grandpa in tow. I told myself that now I could go home and get back to my day, Instead, I found myself glued to the bench in front of the nursery windows; staring at you – Grandma’s tiny little blessing.
In between January 30 1997 and January 30 2013, all of our lives have taken many different turns. I have not seen you or heard your voice in four years. And now you are a young man of sixteen and I cannot even wrap my mind around that. You are in High School and have a part-time job and these facts simply astound me.
Happy Birthday, Cristopher Chase. I think of you each and every day. One day we will be together again and we will have a lot of catching up to do! Until that time, be well, be healthy and be happy. I love you, Buddy.
Your Grandma.

Trust & Fear

Such complex issues and I imagine very different for every person and every family – based on experiences.  A horrific event in a family can turn one against another, spur arguments and change close relationship that you never imagined could change.  It is a sad thing when this happens; and believe me, it does happen.  I know this from personal experience.

Fear has a way of overshadowing trust.  Trust becomes another victim.  I am trying to realize that I have to learn from the past and be cautious, but I also must realize and reaffirm to myself, I cannot be fearful and allow my trust to wither away.  Trust is a special thing in a family – something that I deserve and something that I have earned.  Be cautious.  Be careful.  But don’t lose trust in me.  You may as well just put me in the box and drop me in a hole.  Without trust you cannot really love and nourish a relationship.  My relationships are worth the effort.

I have spent far too much of my 60 years living in fear and worrying “what if” and trying to fix things that I am not equipped to fix and living in a guilt ridden cloud of “why”?  I am working on the fear issue.  I am working on my guilt issues.  And I am really putting effort into my need to fix issue.  I realize I cannot change the past.  I cannot undo things that have been done.  I cannot keep wondering “what if”?  It is not good for me – mentally or physically.  And it is not good for the people I admire and love.  I cannot make people stay in love; it is not my life.  I cannot make the facts of the past fade away; people are responsible for their own actions.  I cannot make someone trust me.  Although I believe it to be a given, I am not in the other person’s mind.  You cannot force fear away – but you can put it on a shelf and not forget the past.  You cannot force trust – but you can slowly realize that most people are good and have good intentions and little by little, that trust will return.

I am working on it.  Truly I am.

Family Dinners

On the television show, Blue Bloods, the entire tv family enjoys (or not) a family dinner each Sunday after attending Mass.

Emily Gilmore required the attendance of her daughter and granddaughter every Friday evening for dinner.

When I was young, it was understood that Sunday dinner attendance was not just expected, but mandatory.  Not in a bad way – just a fact that Sunday dinner was at 2 pm and we all knew to gather around the table at that time.  Sunday dinners were always the best dinners.  Not only the roast beef or the traditional fried chicken or ham with the skin covered with cloves; but the conversations were lighter and school grades and homework were not mentioned.  Oh sure, the kids still always cleaned up after the big dinners, but, for some reason, we didn’t seem to mind.  And later, around 7 when our stomachs would begin to rumble, the leftovers were almost as good as Thanksgiving.

Well, now we have family dinner night and tonight was our very first one.  And so Poppa grilled chicken on the barby and I made yummy cheesy potatoes and the requisite mac ‘n cheese for Max.  Bob and Jeffry and Kerri and Maxwell found a seat at the table as I got drinks for all.   Abby cooed at her Daddy.  Conversations were varied and peppered with a little voice “excuse me excuse me excuse me” so Max could update us on the latest idea that had popped into his amazing mind.  Afterwards, Max thanks me for making a family dinner!  he melts my heart.  Maybe next Friday will be Italian food!!

This is gonna be fun.

a brand new year of MAX

Max stays at Nana’s and Poppa’s house on Thursday and spends Thursday night and all day Friday.  No matter how tired or busy we are, this little ball of fire pops in the front door each week and the house really comes alive.
It has been so cold out that I thought we should do something to get him out of the house to play.  He loves the Park Place kids play area, so that was our choice this week.  I packed a picnic lunch for Max and off we went for a couple of hours of giggles and smiles and “I’m hungry now, Nana”.
At one point, some teen girls walked by and Max turned his head to catch a glimpse of the cute girls.  Poppa asked him if Max thought they were pretty.  “Oh yes”.  When Poppa posed the question, which one is your favorite, Max replied ” I like the big big tall one!”
He spies the little fountain and the coins dotting the bottom.  “Why is money in there?”  I explained that people make a wish and then toss in a coin and maybe sometimes their wish will come true.  I gave him a couple of pennies and a dime and held onto him as he expressed his first wish “I wish for an OWL” and in went the coin.  After leaving the mall, Max  and I are waiting for Poppa to bring the car around, and Max spreads his arms as wide as he can and states to everyone around “This is the best time ever ever ever!”
Back at home, I asked Max how three little cars “stuck” together.  “Well, Nana, they have mag-a-nets, and the problem is, you have to put them back to back”.  Can I remind everyone that this is from a TWO year old??

Before bedtime, Poppa and Max shared a relaxing read.

welcome 2013

Not an ornament left in the house.  Santa rug rolled up and stored.  Garland and tinsel packed away in matching bins with red lids (what else?).   Sleepless in Seattle on the television, and although I could recite most of that movie from memory, I am drawn to watch it anytime it is on.  It soothes me.  It puts my mind at rest and buries all of the anxieties I have at the moment.  Same with You’ve Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally, Mystic Pizza and Steel Magnolias.  So goes my day of relaxation.

This is the first day of the new year.  What 2013 will bring my way is a mystery and I just have to wait and see how the story will go.  I am waiting with an open mind and willing heart and hope.

Thanks for dinner. I’ve never seen potatoes cooked like that before.

2012 in retrospect …

in January I received a video of my beautiful granddaughter, Marluce in her ballerina glory.
and my handsome grandson, Mateo,  on keyboard!
My hubby survived another back surgery – not without some scary issues during his hospital stay, causing Jeffry and I to panic a bit and making unscheduled trips to TMC.  We even brought home a small plastic container of now unnecessary hardware and bolts and screws and rods which still reside in one of his tool boxes as a souvenir, I guess.  5 weeks later, Bob was admitted to UMC to remove one of his kidneys for cancer.  We were lucky as the cancer was completely enclosed inside the failed kidney and there was no need for any further treatment.  Once again, there were breathing and heart rate complications which had Jeffry and I running back and forth again.  I cannot describe how that feels to be summoned by the hospital while a nurse matter of factly states “I think you should come here now”.  Scared is way too mild of a word.
Bob and I retrieved the old 1969 Rahleigh Robin Hood side by side tandem bike and put it back together.  Our plans are to restore  refurbish these and paint one black and paint one white for engagement/wedding/anniversary photo shoots.  Of course, here it is, December 31st and we haven’t even started.  But, we still have plans!

In February, I was able to steal a couple of photos of my Grandson, Cristopher Chase and Granddaughter, Quinn Ariana from my ex daughter in law’s facebook site.  Then she blocked me, but not before I stole a few more.  I would love to spend time with them and include them in family events, but that is not to be, so I take what I can steal er, get!  Chase is 15 in this photo and Quinn is 5.  Chase looks like his dad and Quinn looks so much like Tristan did at that same age.
Marluce recreated Helen Reddy’s “I am Woman” as she pumps gas in the car in Virginia.
 Hey, is that even legal??

Mateo’s 8th Birthday Adventure!  Mateo has a passion for all things weather and absolutely loves watching the weather channel and learning about tornadoes and hurricanes and anything else to do with the weather.  So, we thought this would be an ideal birthday adventure for him.

In March, Maxwell turned 2 and his mommy and daddy threw a huge birthday bash with lots of guests and food and a bazillion balloons.  Safe to say that all of us had a wonderful time, but none more than the Birthday Boy himself.

Marluce and Mateo always enjoy getting packages in the mail – and Grandma here always enjoys sending them.  Happy Easter with lots of Love!

Marluce turned 6 years old on March 30th, and her birthday adventure was customized just for her!

On April 5th, we quietly celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary.  We didn’t need a big hoopla.  Just each other.  (an excerpt from my life story)

If memory serves, September 5, 1967 was the first day of high school and the first time we met. You were a tough looking street kid with a smart-assed attitude. I am not sure just why I was drawn to you at the time, but I was. I was modest and not at all street-wise and obviously reared in an entirely different environment than you experienced. You clearly showed an interest in me with your playful glances and funny comments. My older brother, Jay, put it this way: “here you were, Miss Polly Pure Heart and along came this James Dean wanna be with cigarettes rolled up in his t-shirt sleeve and a beer in hand. Of course you were going to fall for him.”
To say you did not always attend first hour geometry class would be an understatement of immense proportion. To put it in plain speak, you rarely attended most classes. I found myself distracted when you were not in Geometry class. It was the only class we ever had together and even though geometry was a difficult subject for me to grasp (and still is), I felt more confident and at ease when you actually did show up for class. I guess even then, barely knowing each other, you somehow made me feel comfortable and protected. I tried not to let you see that side of me, but I think you had it all figured out. And, yes, I did know that you stared at my legs most of the class time.
I often wondered why you never finished your sophomore year. I know you did not experience the support of a family at home. Looking back, I think you were lost and possibly felt you had nothing to offer high school and high school had nothing to offer your life. You worked. You drank way too much. You dated the wrong girls (well, of course I would say that) and you wandered. I never even realized in my naiveté, there was even a choice on attending school. It was a given in my life and I never thought of it any other way. You, like geometry, were a foreign concept. I am not sure that I have ever figured you out completely.   (more)    gdovin girl

Easter was such a fun day as we entertained family and friends.  Guests were on the back patio and in the house and on the front yard swing – eating, laughing and playing with the little ones.

Mother’s Day was celebrated at the Doubletree Sunday Buffet with the Mundle Family and the lil Gardners.  After the scrumptious buffet, Maxwell and I took a walk on the beautiful green grounds to work off a few calories.

My first grandchild, Tristan Lee became engaged to Drake Shumaker in Farmville Virginia.  So happy for them both and looking forward to meeting a new grandson in law.  This little girl (yes, she is still a little girl to me) deserves all of the love and happiness that comes her way.  I love you so much, Sassy Marie!

In June, Max got to show off his computer savvy while Poppa was not around!

Max receives July mail in his very own mailbox!  And he shows off  his bounty!

I wish I could have attended Marluce’s first official Yard Sale in August in the backyard of her home in Ashburn Virginia.  I am sure I would have found something that I needed to purchase.

Katia and Kiddies –  smiles and hugs.
And the be all and end all of the month of August …

Max continues his culinary career with his signature dish of milk, crackers, cereal grapes and strawberries.  I think we all see, the Next Iron Chef.

Early September, Bob and I worked on laying a laminate maple flooring in the kitchen/dining area of the little house.  Max decided to assist us placing the planks the way he thought they should go.  After a hard days work, he relaxed in a livingroom tent.

Mid September was a great getaway to Oceanside California for the beach wedding of Kyle Harvey & Megan Mundle.  Lots of fun activities, a beautiful wedding and a surprise baby shower for Kerri filled the entire week and I enjoyed every moment of the time.  We shared a condo with the lil Gardners which was a little piece of  heaven compared to staying in a hotel room.  And the additional time playing with Max was just an added bonus.

We spent a day in October at the Agua Linda Farm.  Went thru the pumpkin patch and climbed on the hay bales.  We had a picnic and watched Max ride a horse for the very first time.  We walked thru the petting zoo and made friends with the billy goats.  A perfect way to kick off the fall season.

November brought the most amazing reason to give thanks … she is petite and opinionated and loved and her name is Abigail Anne; Abby to us.  The sweetest little bundle ever.

Thanksgiving in Virginia has Marluce slaving away in the kitchen making her first pumpkin pie.

While my retro Flair oven contributed to Thanksgiving dinner at the Mundle home.

Family and Friends enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner at Chris & Maggie’s with beautiful Tucson weather in their gorgeous and inviting backyard.

After returning to Tucson, we finally resumed our annual Holiday Open House hosting around 26-30 guests during an early evening.  Food was aplenty and catching up with people we love and rarely get the time to see.  Got caught up so much in our guests, totally forgot to take any photos.  Now THAT is a first for us.  We so enjoyed all of the company and conversation and funny stories. Next year – lots of photos!
I won’t repost my recent Christmas Eve events since I just posted, but suffice it to say it goes down in my holiday history as one of the best ever.  I am still smiling.   Christmas Day was a relaxing day of early morning visits with the kids and Mundles and Max and Abby while Maggie served scrumptious french toast and Max opened gifts.  Max, taking some time to show his gifts to his audience, enjoyed each and every moment.   Received a really nice phone call from Ricky which is always a treat.  Later on, a yummy honey baked ham dinner at Chris and Maggie’s with Matt and the kids and grandbabies topped off a wonderful Christmas 2012.

And now, as 2013 is almost upon us, we hope for a healthier New Year for Bob and friends and family needing hope.  We wish to be able to reconnect with family members in the summer in Colorado.  And most of all, we wish for a gentler world this coming year.  It could happen.

what a nice way to spend CHRISTMAS eve

Finishing a midnight shower, I emerge in a towel wrap and my wet hair upon my head only to come face to face with …Mateo?  I honestly could not speak and finally, after staring at the poor kid for what seemed like minutes, I was able to spit out “how did you get here?”  “Hi Grandma!  We drove here.”

I look over on the sofa and there sits a very travel weary Katia and her mom, Gloria.  Katia explained that she and her mom had left northern Virginia on Friday and had been switching driving back and forth allowing one of them to relax and catch a bit of sleep.  Nevertheless, they set aside their physical discomfort and allowed us a good memory of a most special Christmas Eve!

Thus began excited conversations about do you know what grades we are in, Grandma?” and about how long it takes to drive through the huge state of Texas.  In the meantime, Mateo makes himself a peanut butter and JAM (not jelly) sandwich to enjoy with a big glass of cold milk.  Over an hour passed so very quickly and it was difficult not to hold them and hug them every second of the visit.
Marluce always gets smiley faces from her first grade teacher, Mr Meehan.  When asked if she ever gets in trouble for talking in class she offended-ly replies absolutely not because then I would lose points!  Tears pool in my eyes and my heart thumps a bit when she tells me “sometimes I will be somewhere and I will think, I wish Grandma was with me”.
Mateo is quite excited to be getting taller and talks about being in the “upper grade levels” , which, by the way, is third grade!  He is such a sweet and gentle boy and quite demonstrative when he relays stories and thoughts.  He tells me about weather events telling me about the earthquake a year ago in the DC area that they felt “clear over in Ashburn.  I was in the basement and Mom was in the middle floor and I felt shaking and thought that Mom had fallen down.”  We all grin as Katia has never been overweight and Katia states that perhaps she was heavier then – an inside joke for the grownups.  Again I get hugs and heartfelt “I love you Grandma.  I miss you.”   Snacks eaten.  Conversations ended.  And about 1:30 a.m., Katia and Gloria need to get driving to get to California in time to have even just a bit of Christmas Eve.

Hugs and Kisses and more hugs before walking them to the truck.  Driving off I hear their still little kid voices “I love you Grandma.  Good-bye.  Until next time!”  My heart is so full that I can barely sleep for a few hours.  Thank you Gloria.  Thank you Katia.  Best Christmas Eve ever!!

After a few hours sleep, a few more hours of accounting and a bit of relaxing, we are off to meet Maxwell and family so Max and Abby can receive their Christmas Eve packages from Nana and Poppa.   Max was more than happy to open his package of pj’s, and Mickey Mouse and new book and then happily opens Abby’s!  Mommy read both kids books to them before they donned snuggly pajamas and went to bed to await the arrival of Santa.  So much fun to share this tradition with Max and the newest addition – little miss Abby!
Back home after enjoying some Christmas Lights.  Tomorrow is Christmas!
 Happy birthday to baby Jesus.

special Christmas MEMORIES

For several years, Kristine Moulton and I were neighbors in Grand Junction, but more importantly,  close friends.  Today I was tidying from the holiday open house party the other night and as I was placing the leftover cookies just so on the festive table covering and filling the little sleigh with napkins and plates to be used during the rest of the season, it suddenly dawned on me where I got these ideas.
Anyone who knew my mother, will tell you I did NOT get these ideas from her.  My mother’s idea of Christmas decorating was helping with the tree and maybe tossing some little silver icicles over the Denver Broncos clock.  No.  Decorating was never my mother’s forte.  I could not count how many times I would try and rearrange the ornaments on the tree after everyone else went to bed.  It always proved difficult to make the tree look full of ornaments since mom always insisted on getting trees that had a foot of space between the branch layers because it was easier to hang the ornaments.  Seriously?  I could have hung our stockings on some of those trees and they would never have touched another branch!  This is not a photo of our tree, but it may as well have been.

Now, Dorothy Moulton (Kristine’s mom) knew how to spread Christmas throughout her house!  I loved going over almost anytime in December to see the large portrait of her dad replaced by the same size portrait of Santa.  The outside of the home was never Mrs. Moulton’s focus.  But the inside …  even walking through the back door and into the kitchen there were little vignettes in the dining area and the living room consisting of tea sets of hot tea and cookie trays on glass dishes and not the Melmac plates that our family with six kids used.  Hot chocolate seemed to be always waiting and ready for any guest to enjoy.  I was always fascinated by the little offerings and bits of  Christmas decor here and there and tucked into little corners where you would least expect.  And all throughout the living areas you could smell the cinnamon and the chocolate.  It was heaven!
And those memories are always in the back of my mind when I set out decorations and holiday treats.  And when someone comments and admires any of my Christmas decor, I kinda silently thank Dorothy Moulton.  The Sassy neighbor lady with the blond hair professionally piled atop her head; with the pure golden soprano voice; with the impeccable flair of dresses and high heels and jewelry.   Thank you for the inspiration, Mrs. Moulton!  And Merry Christmas wherever you are.

Rainy Day FUN

Max’s mommy makes home made play dough (with sparkles) and it was just the thing to brighten up a rainy day inside with a stir crazy 2 year old!

We used the rolling pin, slotted spoons to make a flower design, and plastic food items from Mini Max’s Mart to make textures and designs.  It is safely stored in an airtight container for next visit!

POPCORN & Christmas Lights

When Max got here this morning, I told him that we were going to make popcorn and get on our jammies and drive around to look at lights tonight.

pjs – check
jacket – check
crocs – check

When?  Now?
No – when the sky gets darker.

Why?
Well, when it is dark, the lights are prettier and we can see them better.

Later in the day …
Nana!  Ready to go and see the Christmas lights?  I’m so excited!
Well, it is only lunchtime, buddy.  Still have to wait until the sky gets dark.
 Why?
Well, when it is dark, the lights are prettier and we can see them better.

At the dinner table …
The sky is getting dark, Nana!  Are you ready to go and see the lights?
Well, we have to finish eating dinner first and then clean up and then we can go.
Why?  I love Christmas lights Nana!

Popcorn is popped. Car seat is buckled.  Christmas music is on the radio.  Poppa is behind the wheel.

We drive to Mamaws neighborhood and I hear Max say “this is Oh Canada Poppa’s house”.  We turn the corner on to the next block and I ask “Max, what lights do you see now?”  The only response is a gentle baby-ish snoring coming from the back seat.

So much for driving around and seeing Christmas Lights!

Hey, are you gonna eat that?

deLIGHTfully MAX

Abby is settling in her new home with Mommy on leave from work for a couple more months.  Keeping Max on his normal schedule is his parent’s priority.  They are so smart!  So, Monday and Tuesday, Max will continue to spend quality time with Oh Canada Poppa (or Chris Mundle as we know him).  Wednesday, Max attends Catalina Methodist Day School in the 2 year old class.  Poppa (Bob) picks Max up from his home on Thursday mornings and he spends all day Thursday, Thursday night and all day Friday at Nana’s and Poppa’s house.
Some highlights from this week:
Max, let’s get your underwear changed before bedtime.
he immediately whips off his big boy underwear and tosses them on the floor.
Nana, first let’s do the naked baby dance!
Max was supposed to be napping, but I kept hearing thuds and bumps.  Max is wide-eyed and innocent as I walk into the room, almost catching him in mid-air as he was jumping on his bed.
What’s going on in here, Max?
Hi, Nana.  ummmm, why are you in here, Nana
I had to pick up some things at Target and Max wanted to be my trusty assistant.  We piled his personal shopping cart into the back of the Hyundai, secured Max in his car seat and off we went to get some groceries and household items.  The ooohs and the ahhhhhs were in abundance, and I will admit that I was the hero of the shopping grandma’s for letting Max push his own cart and fill it to the brim with items from the shopping list and not.  When we got to the checkout, Max insisted on piling his cart items on the black belt slowly moving toward the cashier.  I notice a package of cheese and chicken chimichungas go past me into the hands of the cashier and deposited into my shopping bag.  Hmmm.  Odd.  I did not remember picking that package, but no matter.  Hmmmmm.  A Sesame Street Coloring and Activity book.moving past me on the black belt.  All of the sudden, a familiar little voice proudly announces to the cashier directly behind us “Look what I bought for myself!”
And while taking him home to Abby, he directs Poppa while driving, turn here – on Fon du Lac.  This kid is TWO.  And Fon du Lac is NOT the street where he resides, rather the street LEADING to the street of his address.  Maxwell never ceases to amaze me!

as the years fly BY

Before our first child was even born, I began saving.  Just little things.  Notes from a friend; cards from special people in my life; movie tickets from a favorite show – just stuff like that.  I thought it would be fun for the kids and grand kids to look thru after I am gone and enjoy making up their own stories of why this note or what did the teacher mean by that?  One cubbie contains a note from 5 year old Jeffry to me somewhat as follows:  “dear mom.  Ricky would not let me have a peice of my candie and you said I cud have it so will you plese talk to him about this?’  Just a small example of the fun stuff I have saved.

I have stored them all in little plastic boxes with lids and labeled by the years since 1970.  I walked into Home Goods and voila!  This had to be made especially for me!  I mean, why else would I come face to face with such a piece of memorabilia furniture!  And what a price at only $199.  Alas, I walked away from the cabinet with a heavy heart.  I will hate it when I go back in that store and see that someone else with the same vision has taken it home.

I may even cry.

trick or TREAT

Oct 2003 Kerri & Connie at a Halloween Concert in Tucson
We picked up a couple of Wizards after the concert.
Really never was much of a big Halloween fan.  Oh, when I was a child I was a huge fan just because I had a ton of dance costumes to choose from recitals – so what to wear was never a problem.  And since it was back in the 50’s and 60’s, we could roam for hours by ourselves collecting candy from strangers with no worries.  We knew which houses to hit first as they always gave out real size candy bars!  One Halloween, Mom made all of the fixings for popcorn balls of all colors.  Kids could come right inside the kitchen (front door wide open) and plunk down their bags and take off their coats and dig in to the warm gooey popcorn concoction and make their own treat adding bits of candy or nuts or even fresh coconut.  When they were done, Mom would hand them a flat sheet of waxed paper (Saran wrap back then – never heard of it) and they could roll it around to cover their own home made treat and shove it in their bag.  it was okay to grab a handful of the popcorn all warm and gooey and pop it in your mouth to tide you over during your long night of making the rounds.
Another year, Dad decided that we would all make homemade pulled taffy.  We would make our way walking backwards across the kitchen with warm taffy strung from our hands to Mom or Dad’s hands.  It was a constant motion of pulling the taffy one direction and then the other with buttery hands until it reached the perfect consistency.  Mom would cut the taffy rope into pieces with scissors and we would wrap the little pieces in torn wax paper.  If they were so inclined, kids and adults alike had an open invitation to join in the fun to make their own.  And lots did.
Oct 1998 a 6 year old Tristan sans costume sorts out her bounty at our dining table.
Many other Halloweens followed with carmeled apple make your own treat night.  Our home was turned into a haunted house by my parents and Al & Dorothy LaCount, complete with scary music and cold spaghetti brains and peeled grape eyeballs and jello-y guts.  Even though Janet and I had watched the entire thing come together, we still got creeped out when actually going thru the dark house.  When I got home from trick or treating and was tired and ready for bed, that proved impossible as the adults had turned all 4 bedrooms, the family room, dining and living room and kitchen – all into scary little dark rooms.  So, I made my way to my bedroom and dug my pillow from the closet where it had been stashed in order to make the scary guts and blood room – made my way to one of the bathrooms and sat in the dry tub, pillow propped up on the edge and tried to get some sleep in between the screams of terrorized neighbors!
October 2004 baby Mateo visits his first ever Pumpkin Patch and tries a taste of straw!

October 2007 Katia and little princess Marluce
When I had kids of my own, I was horrible at making costumes.  Did not have a sewing talent to my name and no imagination whatsoever.  So the poor kids were relegated to being clowns or hobos or Fonzie.  When Jeffry was in Taekwondo and would be testing for his black belt at the tender age of 8, he firmly reminded me that his Taekwondo gi was NOT to be used as a Halloween costume.  Orders from Master Rex Veeder!  Hmmm.  Apparently Master Veeder was aware of my past costume endeavors.
Jeffry inherited his mother’s talent for costumes.
I have had other memorable and enjoyable Halloweens as well.  Halloween dinners on the driveway at the Dunham house …
October 2003 at the Dunham halloween Spooktacular Dinner
Enjoying the Tucson Zoo Halloween night with Tristan and Chase … Tristan had my phone headset and was a Rock ‘n Roller and Chase was skull to toe bones dressed as a skeleton.  We toured the Zoo, watched dancers, got lots of candy and treats and were exhausted by the time we got back to Grandma’s to spend the night.
And we just had a visit from Thomas Train.  Nana (me!) decorated the little front yard just for him as we had ZERO trick or treaters.  Sign of the times, I guess.
Yeah – still not so much of a halloween fan – but with Grandkids and friends and family in the picture – well, what could be better than that?

agua linda FARM in amado arizona

Jeffry, Kerri, Max, Bob and I took a little trip to the Agua Linda Farm in Amado Arizona – about an hour south of Tucson.  They advertised a pumpkin festival for the month of October.  We had such a great time.  Maxwell had his first ever pony ride – on a really big pony!  We climbed a haystack, watched Max bounce, went on a hayride, had a picnic and lots more!  I highly recommend it for any family wanting a fun family outing!
And that was our day at the Farm!  We’ll be back.

mr AND mrs

a few photos from the wedding of Megan Mundle and Kyle Harvey that we were so honored to attend in Oceanside California.

Maggie’s special touches really made a unique and fun wedding!
Kerri designed the guest book, which was really a beautiful photo album
with open spaces for guest notes and signatures.  Quite clever!

Congratulations and Best Wishes for a long and happy Marriage!

all that really belongs to us is TIME

Remember watching old black and white shows and the pages of the calendar would go wooshing by to show time passing quickly?  Well, another calendar page just wooshed by today and I feel as though I am back in a black and white movie bobbing and weaving to miss those flying pages!  September – already.  So we have been back in Tucson for over a year now and even that doesn’t seem possible.  My eldest grandchild turned 20 today.  She is no longer a child, but a young lady engaged to be married in the Spring.  Maxwell already communicates like a 5 year old most of the time and watching Mateo and Marluce on skype or in photos makes me think my life is in fast forward.

We have so much happening in the next few months:  Kerri’s sister, Megan is getting married in California in two weeks and we are honored to be invited.  We plan on spending a week out there just RELAXING.  In November, baby girl Gardner will greet us just before the Thanksgiving holiday – which reminds me that the Christmas holiday will not be far behind.  Granddaughter #1, Tristan, will be getting married on St Patricks Day which will mean another short vacation for us and hopefully a visit with Mateo and Marluce as well.

I want to take my time and make these wonderful events last for a bit.

S-L-O-W down time!  You move too fast.

I want to make the morning last.
Just kicking down the cobble stones.
Looking for fun and feelin’ groovy.
Hello lamppost,
What cha knowing?
I’ve come to watch your flowers growing.
Ain’t cha got no rhymes for me?
Doot-in’ doo-doo,
Feelin’ groovy.

Got no deeds to do,
No promises to keep.
I’m dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep.
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me.
Life, I love you,
All is groovy.

I wanna be Groovy!

MACKINAC Island, Michigan

I believe this will be our next vacation (besides the 2013 Family Reunion).

I heard about this island a few years ago and could not remember the name.  Now I have found it and bookmarked it!  There are no motorized vehicles allowed on this island.  Very quaint downtown and old fashioned carriage rides and dancing in the Grand Hotel!  Sounds good to me.

and so IT goes

Sometimes life is planned out and sometimes those plans don’t work.  Bob met with his potential kidney donor this morning and the donor is unable to participate in the transplant.  His doctors have advised against it and his family was uncomfortable with the procedure.  Completely understandable.

We are blessed in just knowing that this man has been poked and prodded and questioned for the past year – all to help a friend.  Yes, there ARE people like that in the world.  Bob knows one!

And so we go on with life and work and family and friends.  Bob is able to complete his daily dialysis routine through the night right in our home.  We can pick up the machine and travel (the airlines HAVE to allow the machine on board and CANNOT charge you for the additional carry on!!).  Bob is back to work at a less stressful job (Ventana tire on Sunrise & Kolb) has already been promoted to Manager and has made such a financial impact on the company that their CPA and Owner have called him several times to congratulate him on sales.  We have a new grand baby on the way for Thanksgiving and healthy grand babies back east.

I am busy with work and fixing up the little house and accounting clients and Camp Nana with Max two days a week.  He spends the night and I can count on waking up with a mini-flash lite shining in one eye and a little voice saying “wake up Nana – it’s morning time”.

We are planning on way more family/friend get togethers overflowing the tiny house!  Already planning one for September!  Also excited to attend megan and Kyle’s Wedding in Oceanside mid-September.  We have extended our trip for a week long stay and will meet up with more family to enjoy.

Thanks to everyone for the queries and good wishes and prayers.  Upward and Onward.

happy 60th to BOB

With a houseful of guests (literally – a houseful!) and lots of great food and good conversation and laughs (a few tears), Bob faced the dreaded SIX-OH without incident, save for perhaps a bit of sugar overload!  Thanks to everyone for providing us with entertainment and friendship!  I will make a monthly potluck into the new Sunday family dinner!

Jay ignores all child labor laws and watches Max clean and wash the berries!

Kerri and baby seemed to enjoy dinner with Oh Pop Pop Canada.

Maggie and Bob listen intently as Chris expounds on the virtues of Olympic Teams’ Canada.

Pat enjoys her dinner on the floor.  What kind of hostess am I??

Not Pictured:  Dave & Monica Ramsze, Matt Ramsze, Me, Elway (not John – the dog!) Jamie Beckman (and her famous mousse oh my goooooooooooooooodnesssssss) Dan & Cathlene Farmer and Me – not that I did not want everyone photographed, but I seem to lose focus when I hit the food tables!

August 1st is COLORADO Day

When Katharine Bates placed pen on paper, surely she had my beautiful home state in mind.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
Grand Junction - Oct 99
For amber waves of grain,
Grand Mesa - Snow Trees, Oct 02
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
Jumbo Lake
From sea to shining sea!
Happy Birthday, Colorado!

why?

When I was a mere 5 years old, I knew that whatever happened, my Mom could fix it.  If something broke – she could glue it.  Something tore – Mom could sew it.  When a knee was scraped – she would apply Merthiolate and blow away the burning before she kissed it and made it all better.  When a heart was broken – she could hold me in a big hug on the sofa and let me watch soap operas with her, and after watching all of the woes on those shows, I forgot all about my sorrow.  Later on, of course, I realized that Mom couldn’t really fix everything, but I thought for sure my same abilities that my children experienced as little ones, would last forever.
That was until they were about 6 and I came to realize that I was powerless over many things.  Oh, sure, I could glue things and Neosporin knees and help fill in some homework.  But for the things that really mattered, my powers were useless.
This realization has somewhat paralyzed me.  For I am a fixer.  I was a junior high Ann Landers.  I was a high school Dr Phil.  And now I have lost my powers – my magical power to fix is gone.  And I hate the feeling.

the BOY is back in town!

Max models his NAVY shirt and hat.
These were in a box from Aunt Monica and Uncle Dave
and waiting for his return in his very own mailbox!
He was so excited to have mail just waiting for him.

Getting reacquainted with his tool box.

Back to work with the tag still on his new hat.

Sure signs that Max is back!

A little “me” time for Max and his painting.  I truly missed this little imp!

O Canada

Maxwell is Canadian/American.  His Mommy was born in Canada as well as her sister and her dad.  So, when we moved back to Tucson and spent more time with Max, I taught him to sing “O Canadaaaaaaaa”.  Not all of the words, mind you, as I do not even know all of the words to the song, but just the beginning – with flair!  We would go to Home Depot and in the middle of shopping, he would suddenly belt out “O Canadaaaaaaaaaa” to no one in particular.  He always got a lot of attention for it – and his “O Canada Poppa” was especially pleased.
Tomorrow. with passport in hand,  Max leaves for a trip to Canada with his Mommy Kerri and O Canada Poppa (Chris) and Mamaw (Maggie) to attend a family wedding.  I don’t know why, but I wish I could see him cross the border, if only to see the smiles on the officials faces when they first set eyes on that adorable passport.  It makes my eyes water just to look at it.  I have no idea why.  I am a sucker for cuteness.
Maxwell, you have a wonderful time in Canada and don’t forget to come back to Nana.  Eh?

Happy Birthday Cassandra!

I first met my adorable precocious niece in 1995 at the tender age of 5 1/2.  I had written to her since she was born and senT birthday gifts, but never met her before then.  Cassi is the only child of my deceased brother, Larry.  Larry was always so special to me, so it is no surprise that she stole my heart the moment I saw her.  After that, she spent a week or so with me at our home in Tucson in the summer up until she was almost 13.  I wish there had been more.  But I cherish those summers and the crafts we did and the Gaslight Theatre shows we watched as well as big family dinners, roller skating and every night readings of Junie B Jones.  After bath time, Cassi would curl up at the bottom of our bed and read chapters of Junie B Moon.  She was such a smart little girl and read like a seasoned teacher.  Now she is a beautiful young lady with a child of her own – Oliver James.  He looks a lot like Cassi and a lot like Larry.  Cannot wait to meet him someday and to wrap my arms around my niece.  Until then – Happy Birthday, Cassi.  I love you so much!

August 1999  Tristan and Cassi enjoy a sundae at Little Anthony’s Restaurant!
August 1999 at the Gaslight Theatre. Popcorn ready and waiting to cheer the hero.
Cassi, er, Cassandra – all grown up!

Final Answer!

This house is waaaaay too little to carry a lot of heavy” design.  So, after initially changing the fake kitchen island sides to oak, staining, poly-ing – I decided the look was too heavy since I was painting the cabinets white so……

the kitchen island went from this

to this!

A very light green makes the kitchen feel so clean & cottage-y!  Not sure about the white trim around the granite top.  Maybe it’s a bit too white?  Suggestions?

that’s WHAT you missed!

After and in between accounting client duties, I worked on kitchen cabinets and while doing so I added some glass tiles because nobody would expect that and then I finished polishing up the vintage stove

and after and in between working on the kitchen I attended to accounting business and since Megan was arriving in town I completely tore apart the first design of her card case and re-made it with
hand-made paper and charms and distressed but
not too shabby and rather more chic and then
Max came over and spent the night but before
he went to bed we made a Yankee Doodle
Dandy stick with lots of red and white and blue and bells to make noise and a pinwheel to go around and of course last but not least the American flag because I could not find one that was half USA and half Canadian but Max would always resort back to the Wheels on the Bus song instead of Yankee Doodle Dandy and then the next morning he woke me up with a soft little voice saying wake up Nana, the sun in shining and so I did and then he ate breakfast and we played cars and then we played puzzle and then we read two books and then he climbed on my lap and watched videos of himself on my phone and after lunch his Meema and Aunt Megan came over to pick him up for a swimming excursion and then I accounted and laundered and painted and cleaned up and missed Megan’s bridal shower because I chipped my tooth and will not go out of the house until my dental appointment to have it repaired and that’s what you missed on Glee – er, Connie!

here comes the BRIDE

I have watched this little girl on the soccer field with ponytail swishing back and forth.  I have heard her con big sister into taking her babysitting jobs.  I watched her make silly goo goo eyes at her boyfriend (now fiance).  And now she is a Registered Nurse in DC, an amazing Auntie and soon to be Bride.  So, I was honored when the Bride’s Mother asked me to decorate the card case for the wedding.  I hope this will fit the bill for her more chic than shabby beach wedding in September.
If not, there is nothing that cannot be changed!

Retro Restoration Cabinet #2 – Just in Time for Father’s Day

Finished the Hubs Coffee Cabinet (sans door) this morning.  Every since he got his first really good coffee maker (Cuisinart – and now graduated to the Keurig) he has enjoyed his morning coffee.  He has always loved coffee cups and the ones from the kids are his favorites.  In the last couple of homes, I have always set aside a special cabinet for his Coffee  Cafe  Java  Mocha  Cappuccino whatever.  Here it is!

More photos AFTER all cabinets are finished and the trim and doors are up!  In the meantime, five more uppers to complete before even thinking about doors and trim!

Retro Restoration … continued

Wow – okay so yesterday was taken up with at least 6 hours scrubbing as clean as a 1960’s range and oven will get.  I don’t think I have used SOS pads for 30 years, but they still get the job done when you have baked on food and who knows what else!!  All in all, she is looking fairly good.  I still need to take the glass doors apart and clean inside and we need to figure out the electrical on the larger oven to get it to work, need one small knob for the clock (also not working), white gloss rustoleum paint on the sides and touch up the paint job on the top and she will be ready to shine with all of the 60’s favorites … mac and cheese … tuna casserole … and, what else – meatloaf!!

But before all of that, gotta refinish the cabinets in what I like to refer to as evolving from 80’s oak to chic shabby chic!

a Tribute to Mom’s Kitchen

I love vintage.  I love ALL things vintage.  So, when I saw a 1960’s Frigidaire Flair stove for sale, what else could I do but bring her home with me?  This particular unit is fairly rough!  Going to take quite a bit of elbow grease, a bit of electrical work, priming and painting the cabinet not to mention the amount of time, to get this in perfect up and running shape.
The bottom cabinet doors were removed and are residing in the dumpster.  Today I spent over 2 hours just cleaning the smaller oven.  The results were worth it.  Now, Max is napping and Nana is hopping in a nice hot shower!  Ahhhhhh.

larger oven before cleaning …                                                       smaller oven after!

the door project (CONTINUED)

Finally got the hinges aligned and I cut the picture frame molding for the top half of the door.  Betcha can’t wait to see it without the tape!  Me too!!

Hoping to finish the bottom molding today, install the latch pieces on the frame, and then touch up any paint mishaps tomorrow and reveal the finished project.  At least for door 1.  Then 6 more to go!

the DOOR Project

Last night, the hubs installed the new Venetian oil rubbed handle & deadbolt.  I opted NOT to get a fancy schmancy handle as there is already a lot going on with the wrought iron gate – so this one is the same style as the original, but much stronger and much prettier!  Same style hinges will be installed AFTER the new white high gloss trim is completely dried and touch ups finished.

and now, I wait for paint to dry!
